Freedom for NGAWANG SANGDROL

Press release of the CSPT

Version française

Paris
April 25th 2000

Continuing the action it has undertaken for the release of all prisoners of conscience detained in Tibet by the Chinese, The Comité de Soutien au Peuple Tibétain (French Tibet Support Group), in cooperation with M. Yann Galut, member of Parliament, has made public today, Tuesday 25th April, a new appeal in favor of NGAWANG SANGDROL, a young Tibetan girl sentenced to 21 years of detention having never comitted crime nor act of violence.

This day is also the world's youngest political prisoner's 11th birthday, GENDUN CHOEKI NYIMA, who has been recognised as the Panchen Lama by the XIV Dalaï Lama, and of whom the world has had no news in the last five years.

This appeal has been signed by more than 250 well known public figures from the world of litterature (Jacques Attali, Amélie Nothomb, Robert Sabatier, André Glucksman...), music (I Muvrini, Yves Duteil, Véronique Sanson, Jean-Louis Murat...), the cinema and theatre (Costa Gavras, Alain Corneau, Michael Lonsdale, Raymond Devos...), sport (Emmanuel Petit, Abdelatif Benazzi, Christophe Dominici, Amélie Mauresmo, Jean Galfione...), important major representatives of civil society (Pierre Bergé, Danielle Mitterrand, Jacques Gaillot...) politics (over 100 French members of parliament, Members of the European Parliament or local government leaders).

The latest repression affecting several hundreds of peaceful protesters represents a real challenge to the international community at large. This appeal has been submitted to President Chirac, Prime Minister Jospin and Foreign Minister Védrine. Within the appeal the signataries call for the negociations between the Dalai Lama and the People's Republic of China and decide to "symbolically adopt" NGAWANG SANGDROL one who is considered to be "the true symbol of non-violent struggle and of the women movement for freedom and justice": NGAWANG SANGDROL who is, we know, to be in a very critical condition.

The CSPT is relying on the French government to exert firm pressure upon the Chinese government in order to obtain the release of this young girl, to guarantee her security and allow her to leave Tibet.
